What is Tartar (Tooth Stone)?

Dental plaque is a biofilm, or a mass of bacteria, that grows on the teeth. At first, it is a sticky colorless deposit, but as it hardens and forms tartar (also known as calculus), it changes into a brown or pale-yellow color. Both plaque and tartar buildup are common dental problems. Tartar, when not effectively removed through regular brushing and flossing, can lead to various dental issues, tooth decay, gum disease, and even tooth loss if left untreated. Tooth stone formation is associated with several clinical manifestations, including bad breath, receding gums, and chronically inflamed gingiva. Did you know that a whopping 68 % of adults have dental tartar?

To prevent tartar buildup, it's essential to maintain a consistent oral hygiene routine, including regular brushing (at least twice a day), flossing, and using mouthwash. Additionally, reducing sugary and starchy foods in your diet can help minimize plaque formation, eventually leading to tartar if not properly removed. But no matter how well you care for your teeth, stains and tartar buildup are inevitable for everyone. Bacteria colonies form in our mouths every time we eat or drink, and while brushing and flossing is an effective strategy for getting rid of most of these particles, some always remain. Tartar buildup is minerals, bacteria, and food all in one, leaving an unpleasant odor behind. If you feel your breath is not up to par, chances are you are due for your professional cleaning! You need to visit your dentist for a checkup and dental cleaning at least once every six months.

Tartar on Teeth

Brushing and flossing can remove plaque which forms calculus; however, once formed, it is too hard and firmly attached to be removed with a toothbrush. A professional dental cleaning will remove the surface build-up of plaque and tartar, as well as some fresh stains that are not yet deep. Much more thorough than the brushing and flossing you do at home. Dental cleaning protects teeth from cavities, dental caries, and other tooth and gum problems. Tartar buildup can be removed with ultrasonic tools or dental hand instruments (such as a periodontal scaler)! So, if you have it, visit your dental hygienist as soon as possible!

Scaling and polishing (dental cleaning) are great ways to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Scaling refers to removing plaque, tartar, and other deposits from the teeth and gums. Scaling helps to prevent gum disease and tooth decay by removing harmful bacteria and buildup from these areas. Polishing is the process of smoothing the surfaces of the teeth after scaling. This is done using a unique dental tool and a polishing paste. The polishing paste removes any remaining stains or surface debris from the teeth, leaving them smooth and clean. Both scaling and polishing are essential to maintaining good oral hygiene and preventing dental problems. It is recommended to have these procedures done regularly, usually every six months, as part of a routine dental check-up.
